Cave Story invariably gets mentioned whenever independent games are discussed, and for good reason: it's a sublime video game. The graphics and music are decidedly retro, but serve the simple elegance of the game. Whereas most games rely on tension and forced challenges to keep you interested, flOw draws the player in by allowing them to adjust the challenge themselves through actions performed during the game. With crystalline graphics and soothing, ambient music, the result is an experience you can truly get lost in.

Toribash is a unique physics-based game that does a better job of capturing the improvisation and grittiness of unarmed combat than most other fighting games. And yet it's turn-based! But therein lies the beauty of the game, where, instead of using preset moves, you are allowed to tweak and turn your fighter's joints at various intervals in order to attack or defend. When all is said and done, the results can either be laughably awkward or graceful and grisly.

It is a lonely world, full of mysterious creatures and people whom you cannot interact with, forcing you to imagine what their lives are like, or what their purpose is. All of Nifflas's games are imbued with an incredible atmosphere (and a certain longing), but this is arguably his strongest.

Samorost and its sequel (from which the screenshot is taken) take place in a surreal world that is reminiscent of fantasy classics like Le Petit Prince or The Neverending Story. In Czech, the word Samorost means "driftwood," and it's an apt title, considering the organic and mysterious feel of the game and the unique graphical style, which combines collage with cartoon animation.

Somewhere along the way, the mainstream adventure game died, and with it went a whole lot of the irreverent humor that many fans came to know and love. Sam n' Max, based on the lovable miscreants designed by Steve Purcell, were some of the most irreverent and most hilarious, and oh, how we missed them. Thankfully, Telltale Games saw fit to bring back the misfit duo as an episodic game series, and they've never looked (or sounded) better. Liero, the classic freeware deathmatch game, paved the way for Cortex Command, a jittery, mad-cap game of base defense where physics enable you to shoot off body parts or crush your opponents with rocket ships. Advanced AI, group tactics, and deformable terrain round off a formidable list of features that keeps getting bigger (as the game is still being developed). It also features the artwork of Niklas Jansson, and that's never a bad thing.

And fighting head-on should be a last resort against the creatures you'll encounter in Penumbra, who will work in groups and take advantage of the game's physics in order to get at the you. Joseph White’s games are always brimming with cute charm, and Chocolate Castle is no exception! Really, as soon as you see that wonderful Lexaloffle logo, you know you are in good hands. Little details, like the windows in the castle that light up as you complete stages, and the way the chocolate gets munched up and leaves crumbs, make me feel like I’ve been stuffed into the warm belly of a Taun Taun after spending hours on the cold, frozen surface of Hoth.

One of the in-jokes here on TIGSource is that we worship Kenta Cho like some kind of Chaldean god. Okay, it's more of a reality than an in-joke, but our reasoning is sound: this guy produces some really good abstract shoot 'em ups.
